Psychological Services

Here are brief descriptions of the services that I offer. For more information on these and other important aspects of the work I do, please see the education page.

Individual therapy

The goal for therapy is to identify meaningful changes you may want to make in your life, overcome learned barriers, and build new skills to help you live a more meaningful life. I am trained in various Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, in particular Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have 14+ years’ experience working with people across the age spectrum who have had a wide variety of challenges, most recently specializing in helping people who have experienced psychosis. While many CBT treatment packages are designed for 12 sessions, this is not an expectation, and we use Shared Decision Making to set individualized expectations.

Group therapy

Group therapy shares many of the same methods of change of individual therapy, but with the opportunity to get additional perspectives, and the chance to apply strategies together. I run groups on the following topics:

  • Caregiver’s group: Whether you are a parent, sibling, friend, or child, we all have people we care about who need our support and love. More and more research has confirmed that caregivers need support too! Come work through specific challenges and support each other.
  • Mindfulness group: Mindfulness has become a buzzword and sometimes put across as a panacea. Mindfulness is not a treatment in itself, but it is a fundamental tool for approaching life. In this group, we practice this tool.
  • Unusual experiences group: our society has the belief that distressing physical, sensory, and emotional experiences are a sign of severe illness, and until recently, psychology has done little to dispel this myth. Let’s change that.
  • Parenting group: Parenting is the most challenging job out there, and the increased demands, fears, and communal isolation thrown at us make it even harder. In this practical group, we use research evidence to support each other to tackle complex parenting issues constructively.

Classes

Curious about how we function? Wondering how our peculiar system of mental health came to be how it is? Learn more! I hold classes on the following topics:

  • Core Concepts
    • 1 part. Overview of the development of understanding how we work, our differences, how we develop problems, and how we treat those problems
  • History of Psychology and Psychotherapy
    • 4 parts, from ancient through modern. These classes will change your understanding of what psychotherapy is for and what it can do
  • Nature and Nurture
    • 1 part. Challenge yourself to expand your understanding about how we work, individually and collectively
  • Diagnosis
    • 4 parts, putting psychiatric labels into historical and personal context. You will come away with an understanding of the strengths and limits of psychiatry’s current system, and be positioned to take charge of these areas for yourself and loved ones
  • Unusual Experiences
    • 3 parts. Exploring different types of experiences. Recognizing them as natural human responses. Learning to bring them into context so we can better understand each other.
  • Responding to Micro/macroaggressions
    • 2 parts. We live in a very diverse city and country. Navigating this with each other can be challenging, and sometimes harmful. Together, we will explore essential elements for balancing safety, allyship, justice, tolerance in the face of prejudice, and generally being a good citizen.

Workshops

These are less didactic, and more shared problem solving. In a safe, supportive environment, we will use a 6-step model to explore and come up with strategies to tackle important community challenges regarding topics such as economics, healthcare, stigma, climate change, social media, housing, etc. Anything meaningful to us!

Supervision / Consultation

Supervision: for therapists in training, or looking for additional growth.

Consultation: for groups in the community who want to know about how psychological factors affect their work environment or community engagement. This can be to address specific situations that arise. It can also be to build understanding of strengths and barriers in accomplishing your group’s mission in the community. By special arrangement, please contact for more information.
